ORGANIZATION HISTORY

The Faraday Foundation stems from a legacy that has been passed down for the last 225 years, originating with and built from the beliefs of the scientist dubbed “Wizard I” by Queen Victoria. Michael Faraday was highly respected and known for his great contributions to the science community. The Faraday Foundation was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2016 with a reputable Board of Directors whose core goal is to make educational, scientific content accessible to all. Currently the Foundation is searching for Wizard V to carry on Michael Faraday’s original values of sharing science education with all of mankind.

Nearly 210 years ago,

the son of a poor blacksmith read a book he was repairing, while performing his duties as an apprentice in a bookbinder’s shop. Marcett’s Conversations on Chemistry captured the imagination of the young teenager, Michael Faraday. He delighted in learning of recent discoveries in the fledgling field of science. That scientific interest led him to a position at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, where Faraday made many great scientific discoveries of his own; one of which changed our world, forever. However, he is most renowned for his ability to communicate science to the public.

Wizard II: Dr. Hubert Alyea

Imagine the interest and apprehension people of that era might have held regarding a new discovery of the time: the fiery sparks of the phenomenon called “electricity.” Audiences were enamored at Faraday’s ability to use common language to explain the nature of the unnerving electrical current, and also engage them in the delight of many profound scientific discoveries of the time. Michael Faraday was indeed a masterful science communicator. Queen Victoria informally called him…. Wizard; a man who caused us to experience the truest beauty of the Creation.

Other science communicators have answered the call to be providers of common sense and understanding of scientific innovations. At the end of World War II, the term atomic energy entered the public lexicon, leaving most of the public fearful and apprehensive of anything tagged, “nuclear.” Dr. Hubert Alyea at Princeton was engaged by the United Nations to visit 88 countries, explaining the nature and positive possibilities of atomic energy to millions in attentive audiences. Often compared to Faraday, Dr. Alyea took the role Wizard II, and served as the key role model for the Disney movie; The Absent Minded Professor.

In the 1950’s, when the Sputnik satellite began the space race and subsequent pursuit of science learning, the public turned to yet another renowned science communicator, Don Herbert, better known as television’s Mr. Wizard. For five decades, generations of youngsters were inspired to learn the “science of everyday living,” from the third great Wizard.

The current holder of the Wizard title, Steve Jacobs, was mentored by two of those famed science communicators. Alyea taught him chemistry and the art of being a scientific raconteur. Mr. Wizard trained him to follow in his footsteps in television. In 1995, at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, near the memorial of Wizard I, Michael Faraday, the torch was passed. Wizard IV was given the challenge of carrying the science communicator’s ”light of illumination.”

In the first three Wizard incarnations, a sponsoring entity supported the efforts of the Wizards. That generous bit of corporate wisdom afforded the world an insight of nature that changed it for the better.

The world’s current reliance on technology and scientific discovery has created more than ever, a need for access to sound information, presented by fluent and sympathetic scientists. The current Wizard IV team has done well; bringing outstanding science learning opportunities to many audiences across several forms of media. Wizard IV does not require, nor are we asking for assistance to maintain our current status. However, we now see an unprecedented need and opportunity to expand our reach. Partnering with a corporate sponsor will allow what four generations of Wizards have built, to grow significantly.

Michael Faraday Lecture

We have prepared a plan for that growth; a step-by-step process leading to a world class, and eventually self-supporting presence. This document provides a very short outline of our plan. We are requesting a partnership, combining our resources to continue developing the Wizard plan and implementing it via a rigorous action strategy.

You have the opportunity to enter into a delightful adventure; one that can grow to be a prestigious and well-received gift to our culture. It has a reach far beyond any one single country. The enjoyment of true science is universally accepted; a world-wide phenomena. And, this initiative will also provide a special gift: a method for identifying and supporting talented young science communicators in the dawn of their careers. Eventually, we will take a bow for finding ……Wizard V !
